Isso significa que a garrafa que seu avô jogou fora provavelmente ainda está por aí, em algum lugar, impactando o meio ambiente.

Para ilustrar, considere o caso de uma garrafa descartada em um rio de águas frias na Patagônia. A baixa temperatura retardará o processo de degradação, fazendo com que a garrafa persista por ainda mais tempo. Já em um rio tropical, como o Amazonas, a alta temperatura e a maior incidência de luz solar podem acelerar um pouco o processo, mas ainda assim levará muitas décadas. A conscientização sobre esse tempo de degradação é fundamental para incentivarmos práticas mais sustentáveis, como a reciclagem e o consumo consciente.

A Química da Degradação: PET em Detalhes

Adentrando no âmbito técnico, a garrafa PET, ou Polietileno Tereftalato, é um polímero termoplástico amplamente utilizado na indústria de embalagens devido à sua resistência, leveza e capacidade de ser reciclado. Sua estrutura molecular é composta por longas cadeias de monômeros de etileno tereftalato, interligados por ligações éster. A degradação do PET na água é um processo complexo que envolve a quebra dessas ligações, resultando na fragmentação do polímero em moléculas menores.

O processo de hidrólise, ou seja, a quebra das ligações éster pela ação da água, é um dos principais mecanismos de degradação do PET. No entanto, essa reação é extremamente lenta em condições ambientais normais, principalmente devido à alta estabilidade química do polímero. A temperatura da água, o pH e a presença de catalisadores podem influenciar a velocidade da hidrólise. Por exemplo, águas mais quentes e com pH mais extremo (ácido ou alcalino) tendem a acelerar a degradação, embora ainda em uma escala de tempo considerável.
