O consumo de energia de um aquário é determinado, principalmente, pelos seus componentes elétricos. Aquecedores, filtros, bombas de circulação e iluminação contribuem significativamente para o gasto energético total. Por exemplo, um aquecedor de 200W que opera por 12 horas diárias consumirá 2.4 kWh por dia, resultando em aproximadamente 72 kWh por mês. A bomba de circulação, vital para a oxigenação e distribuição de nutrientes, pode consumir de 5W a 20W, dependendo do tamanho do aquário e da vazão necessária. Multiplicando esse consumo por 24 horas e pelos dias do mês, obtém-se o consumo mensal da bomba. A iluminação, crucial para plantas e peixes, varia amplamente. Lâmpadas LED consomem menos energia do que lâmpadas fluorescentes ou HQI, e o tempo de uso também impacta o consumo total.
